My First January without a gym.

Technically last January was my first January without a gym but my intention at that time was to return to working in a gym setting when things settled. Besides things being still largely unsettled, I decided to go into business for myself. While it has been rewarding I’m still feeling a little unsettled. I miss having coworkers, and members to interact with. (This one has been the toughest as I interact with a toddler most of the day.) I like having a large variety of equipment to use. I miss not having the mental load of every business decision. The freedom I gained by being my own boss has an anxiety I wasn’t prepared for and it has caused me to freeze more than I’d like to admit and I’m still doing pretty well.

The reason I bring this up is that if this is January you have decided to work on your fitness for the first time or…again, you are going to experience a lot of the same feelings but a little bit differently. You will be excited to start and get results but you will struggle with some of the tradeoffs. Figuring what workout you want to do might prove stressful at times. Especially since there will be tons of options that you are not quite sure how to use them. You might have to trade the comfort of your friends and family for seemingly unfriendly faces who seem to be moving at a pace you don’t feel ready for. I know how that can feel paralyzing.

I guess what I’m saying is that these feelings around starting something is natural, you are not alone and there isn’t just one answer to get you to where you want to go. I discovered that while a gym is nice it’s not necessary. If being in a gym setting is going to cause you more anxiety at first there are great ways to start on a fitness journey without stepping foot inside a gym. I can help you with that.
